Geochronology involves understanding time in relation to geological events and processes. Geochronological investigations examine rocks, minerals, fossils and sediments. Absolute and relative dating approaches complement each other. Relative age determinations involve paleomagnetism and stable isotope ratio calculations, as well as stratigraphy. Speak to a specialist. Geoscientists can learn about the absolute timing of geological events as well as rates of geological processes using radioisotopic dating methods. These methods rely on the known rate of natural decay of a radioactive parent nuclide into a radiogenic daughter nuclide.

A defining feature of the cluster is its position as a dating centre of excellence, with radiometric, geochemical bomb-test, Sellafield, Chernobyl fallout; stable lead isotopes etc , and physical luminescence dating methods useful on timescales ranging from several years to billions of years. This creates a suitable intellectual ambience for the AIF and its visitors, but also opportunities for cross-calibration of dating techniques that are unrivalled.

Our laboratory and research group is very committed to outreach and eduction. The PI and graduate students have been involved in minority outreach and recruiting efforts with the goal of exposing minority students to modern geochemistry, geochronology, and thermochronology and their application to geology, tectonics, petrology, and stratigraphy.
Stockli has a long track record of recruiting and training minority graduate students and teaching short courses and training students through summer internships from under-represented and minority groups. Stockli has built a strong collaboration with the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. In the summer of , 3 minority undergraduate students from Texas and Puerto Rico participated in our two-month summer internship program.
The program also involved two UT minority Ph.
One important part of my work is U-series U-Th dating. This requires precise and accurate U and Th isotope measurements and can be used for establishing timing of events and determining the rates of a wide variety of natural processes in earth and planetary sciences. The U-series disequilibrium method is based on the radioactive decay of radionuclides within the naturally occurring decay chains.
There are three such decay chains, each starts with an actinide nuclide U, U, Th having a long half live and ultimately ends with different a stable isotope of lead. U-Th dating can be applied to secondary calcium carbonate formations like speleothems , travertine or corals. For dating e. Differential solubility between uranium and its long lived daughter isotope Th means that drip water in caves and calcite precipitates from this water e.

Uranium-Thorium dating is applied to coral, stalagmite and flowstone samples. mg: The laboratory is able to conduct U-Th on these sample types, however.
U-Th disequilibrium dating Th dating has been widely used as a chronological framework in studying Quaternary climate change, radiocarbon calibration, and human evolution. In this talk, I will introduce the fundamental theory of the Th dating techniques. I will discuss the uranium-series disequilibrium equations, and the key details in archiving precise and accurate dating, including spike calibration, standard reliability, instrumental tuning, etc.
I will compare two different data acquisition methods, using ion counters and faraday cups, respectively. Our data indicate that with the newly factory designed signal amplifiers, the faraday cup measurement has a great potential in high-precision U-Th dating. This is the core of the Uranium-Series laboratory. Its primary mission is to date geological and archaeological samples, along with participating in uranium-series geochemistry research, techniques and analytical methods. The uranium-series carbonate dating method is based on the elemental fractionation between the elements of natural radioactive decay chains, due to the different geo chemical behavior of uranium and thorium in the atmosphere.
This is key to dating methods based on uranium-series disequilibrium. As a result, water usually contains dissolved uranium but not thorium. Due to the natural decay of uranium, the radioactive equilibrium tends to recover over time, breaking down the uranium and forming its daughters which, in turn, participate in other disequilibriums of the same decay chain.
We are world leaders in the determination of geological ages using the argon-argon (40ArAr) and uranium-thorium/helium (U-Th/He) dating method.
The Uranium Series Chronology Laboratory at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has facilities for precisely measuring U—U—Th isotopes and dating carbonate samples from a wide rage of surface environments, including speleothem, coral, tufa, lake authigenic carbonate and carbonate nodules in loess sequences for applications in oceanography, paleoclimatology, paleoenvironmentology and archeology. The laboratory has a Thermo-Fisher-Scientific Neptune-Plus, a multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer MC-ICP-MS , which provides high precision measurements for uranium series dating using isotopic dilution techniques.
Aridus II is used to reduce solvent interference, improve signal stability, and increase sensitivity by up to times. The laboratory has clean rooms for both chemical separations and instrumental analysis, including air filtering and water purification systems. There are six fume hoods and one central working bench in the ultra-clean chemistry room. The ultra-clean chemical room. The U-Th blank of the water is low and suitable for U-series work.

Decay of uranium and thorium to helium provides a versatile chronometer for examining the timing and rates of a wide variety of events and processes in earth and planetary science. He dating is also used in a wide range of other applications, including dating young volcanic rocks, estimating meteorite thermal histories, thermal histories of sedimentary basins, and tracing the effects of wildfire on the earth’s surface.
